Coronation Street fans will have this week seen Claire Peacock amass a cool £7,000 for old concert programmes she found in the attic of her new house. And with the credit crunch is putting its squeeze on our finances, it could be time for you to have a clear out and see if there are any items lurking in the loft that you could turn into cold hard cash.

Online auction sites such as eBay have made it easier than ever to sell our unwanted goods. The site allows people to offer for auction anything from household items and electrical goods to cars and computers. Last month Ian Usher auctioned off his entire life - including his house, car and all his possessions - after the break-up of his marriage prompted him to want a fresh start in Australia.

Although selling your life might be seen to be going a bit far, the market for second-hand goods is growing. A recent survey by Alliance & Leicester found that 25% of the UK population are regularly using eBay and charity shops since the credit crunch started to bite.
